Open Beta Access for Nothing Phone (3)
Nothing has officially launched the open beta for
Nothing OS 5.0, a major software update built on
Android 17. The initial phase of this
beta program is exclusively available for the Nothing Phone (3). Users must download the Nothing Beta Hub version 2.0 application to access the update, rather than downloading the firmware directly from a browser.
The beta enrollment window is strictly limited to seven days, after which it will close to new participants. Early adopters have reported network errors and missing download links on the beta page, with some users needing to retry up to 50 times before the update appeared. Because this is pre-release software, Nothing warns that installation may interfere with data and require a factory reset, making data backups essential.
Visual Overhaul and New Features
Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a refined visual identity that utilizes a new primary system font called Geist, featuring bolder characters and less white space than the standard Roboto. The interface includes new frosted and translucent material effects, alongside a new customization theme called Lucent. An adaptive color system automatically tints app icons, widgets, and 1x1 Quick Settings tiles to match the dominant color of the active wallpaper.
Management of the device's rear lighting is now handled by a dedicated Glyph app. This application introduces a Glyph Timer widget and a Flip to Start function, making it faster to utilize the Glyph Matrix without navigating through deep system settings. Additional system updates include a refreshed status bar, Camera app, and a redesigned Gallery app with new album sorting options designed for faster photo discovery.
Features Missing From the Initial Beta
While the beta includes a new fluid clock face called Gooey, several heavily advertised features are notably absent from this initial build. The completely redesigned home screen and the hardware-inspired Micrographics clock face are excluded from the current open beta and will instead launch with the general stable release.
The new Essential Apps Builder is currently in a restricted early beta that requires users to join a waitlist. Furthermore, Essential Space updates are rolling out separately via Google Play, with redesigns and MCP support arriving in November and October, respectively. Real-time translation via Essential Voice is also delayed until later in the year.
Should You Upgrade Now?
For users relying on their Nothing Phone (3) as a primary device, waiting for the stable release is the safest decision. Nothing plans to launch the stable version of Nothing OS 5.0 starting in mid-October. Given the high risk of data loss requiring a factory reset, frustrating download bugs, and the fact that the flagship home screen redesign is completely missing from the current build, most everyday users should bypass this short seven-day beta window.
