Interface Adaptation in iOS 27
To accommodate the new form factor, several core interface elements have been relocated. Lock Screen controls, the Dock, and app navigation elements now sit along the side of the display instead of across the bottom. This design choice effectively frees up vertical space for content.
When the device is open, the iPhone Duo displays two Home Screen pages simultaneously. The status bar has been redesigned as a circular, flexible system that fits perfectly into the corner of the screen. Meanwhile, the Dynamic Island has been adjusted to run vertically along the side of the outer display.
The interface is completely responsive to the device's physical position, changing based on the exact angle of the fold. It automatically reorients when the phone is turned on its side and smoothly switches to the appropriate display when the hardware is flipped over. Apple noted that building this required changing how individual apps lay out content as the screen changes shape, which included moving the Dock to a vertical orientation.
Controls consistently stay anchored to the side of the screen throughout use. Additionally, the Lock Screen seamlessly moves its buttons aside to give users more room to display their chosen wallpaper.
The iPhone Duo notably supports side-by-side multitasking, which represents a major first for the iPhone ecosystem. Split View allows users to run two different apps at once, or even open two windows of the exact same app, such as Safari. Users can also utilize Siri AI on one side of the screen while continuously viewing content on the other.
Navigating this multitasking environment relies on intuitive gestures. Users can swipe up from the bottom to switch apps or save a specific pair of apps to return to later. The software intelligently adjusts to how the phone is angled, rather than merely detecting whether it is fully open or closed.
When the device is partially folded, interface content automatically shifts away from the crease, as taps are harder to register in that area. Furthermore, advanced audio tuning algorithms actively account for the changing distance between the speakers as the phone moves through different physical positions.
When laid flat on a table, iOS leverages sensors in each half of the device to let users comfortably view content without needing a dedicated stand. Setting the iPhone Duo down triggers StandBy on whichever display faces up, even when the phone isn't actively charging. This mode turns the device into a convenient photo frame, widget hub, or bedside clock.
New Calendar and Weather faces join the existing Clock and Modular options for StandBy mode. The Photos face now displays Shared Albums, and every face supports additional colors, fonts, and unique complications. To support these sweeping software changes, Apple has built new APIs for developers to adapt their apps to the dual-display design, with iPhone Duo support coming to Device Hub in Xcode.
Hardware and Compatibility
The iPhone Duo comes with a familiar short and wide form factor, which has been tried and tested by several Android makers, including Samsung with its own Galaxy Z Fold8. Apple finally unveiled its first folding phone after years of persistent rumors, leaks, and high anticipation.
When evaluating the physical dimensions, the iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams. It measures 84.1 x 117.8 x 11.3 mm when folded, and expands to 117.8 x 164.6 x 5.2 mm when unfolded.
Samsung’s competing foldable is a sizeable 53 grams lighter, weighing in at just 201 grams. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is also thinner in both its folded (9.7 mm) and unfolded (4.5 mm) states. This weight difference certainly sticks out during direct comparisons.
Despite the added bulk, the iPhone gets a more premium titanium frame, while the Galaxy device sticks to traditional aluminum. Both foldable devices feature protruding camera islands, with the one on the iPhone seemingly sticking out more than its Galaxy counterpart. However, the iPhone gets a slight durability edge thanks to its official IP68 ingress protection, while the Fold8 is only IP48-rated.
Display Specifications
When it comes to the outer cover screen, both devices are nearly identical in terms of dimensions, resolution, base refresh rate, and peak brightness. The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch LTPO OLED display with a 1398 x 2034 pixel resolution, delivering 460 ppi and an impressive 3000 nits of peak brightness.
By comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold8 utilizes a slightly larger 5.5-inch LTPO OLED screen. It features a 1248 x 1972 pixel resolution at 428 ppi, matching the iPhone's 3000 nits of peak brightness. Visually, the Fold8 has a more uniform look, while the iPhone Duo features distinctively rounded corners.
The front-facing camera designs also differ significantly on the cover displays. The iPhone Duo brings a larger selfie camera cutout, which is stuck in the corner of the screen. This contrasts with the more compact and centrally placed cutout on the Fold8.
Moving to the interior, both phones get the exact same 7.6-inch main display diagonal. The iPhone Duo offers a slightly sharper main screen with a 1878 x 2670 pixel resolution and 430 ppi. The Galaxy Z Fold8 follows closely with a 1848 x 2448 pixel resolution and 404 ppi.
Apple secures a design advantage on the main interior screen by hiding the selfie camera entirely behind the display for a more uninterrupted look. Elsewhere, both the iPhone Duo and the Galaxy Z Fold8 feature variable 1-120Hz refresh rates to ensure smooth scrolling and optimized battery life across all screens.
