Apple Enters the Foldable Market

Apple today introduced the iPhone Duo, marking the company's highly anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market. Since its 2007 launch, when Steve Jobs first unveiled the original device, the iPhone has maintained the same basic design: a flat, rigid rectangle. Now, Apple is folding on that form factor with the most transformational change to the product line since its inception.

The new foldable does not stray too far from Apple's roots, opening into a familiar rectangle with rounded corners. However, the design brings something entirely new to the market and shows the tech giant can still mix up its iconic hardware. During Apple's 2012 lawsuit against Samsung, designer Christopher Stringer recounted the process of picking a shape, noting the company tested an "extrudo" lozenge-like model before landing on the final iPhone design.

For months, the device was unofficially referred to in rumors as the iPhone Fold, iPhone Ultra, iPhone Passport, iPhone Folio, and iPhone Wide. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that the foldable would be positioned in Apple's "Ultra" tier, a claim echoed by Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station. However, Apple opted for the "Duo" branding, a name with company history dating back to the 1995 PowerBook Duo notebooks and the recent MagSafe Duo Charger.

“With the largest display ever on iPhone that still fits easily in your pocket, combined with the power of A20 Pro, iPhone Duo helps you stay more immersed and productive wherever you go," Ternus stated. Unveiled at Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, eager customers can place pre-orders starting Friday, October 16. Full retail availability kicks off a week later on Friday, October 23.

Design and Build Quality

Crafted from premium grade 5 titanium for incredible strength, the iPhone Duo boasts an elegant mirror-polished finish. Buyers can choose between two striking color options: star white and night sky. Driving the foldable experience is a precision hinge engineered from over 100 components to precisely control opening and closing.

This hinge supports the center of the display to deliver a smooth, satisfying feel with every use. It is neatly concealed beneath a 3D-printed cover featuring a contrasting micro-blasted finish. To protect this complex folding structure, Apple has implemented several robust durability measures throughout the chassis.

Internal support ribs pair with ceramic fiber inserts inside the antenna splits to significantly enhance frame rigidity. High-strength glass sits above and below the folding display panel. Custom adhesives allow these layers to glide past one another like the pages of a book, relieving bend stress and preventing the panel from distorting over time.

A titanium plate at the bottom further enhances the device's overall durability. Furthermore, the entire package earns an IP68 rating for reliable splash, water, and dust resistance.

Screen protection also sees a major upgrade, with the front outer display utilizing Ceramic Shield 2. This next-generation glass delivers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation. Meanwhile, the back panel remains shielded by the standard, yet highly durable, Ceramic Shield.

Third-party cases are already appearing to protect the new form factor. Options like Casetify's Bounce case offer 21.3 feet of drop protection and seven times military standard testing, featuring Tessy lock technology and a 2mm camera ring. Alternatively, their Impact case provides 11.5 feet of drop protection, while a Clear case is available for showing off the device's design.

Display Specifications

While closed, the device is similar in size to a passport. Users interact with a beautiful 5.3 to 5.5-inch outer Super Retina XDR display that is comfortable to use one-handed. Delivering 90 percent of the screen area found on the iPhone 18 Pro, this exterior panel ensures a highly capable, pocketable design.

Unfolding the chassis reveals a massive 7.6 to 7.8-inch inner Super Retina XDR display featuring a dual-layer Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) design. Opened, it is the thinnest iPhone ever created. This inner screen dwarfs the iPhone 18 Pro Max by offering 50 percent more screen real estate, and it is 80 percent larger than the standard iPhone 18 Pro.

Maintaining visual continuity is a priority, so both displays share the exact same aspect ratio. The unfolded device utilizes a wide 4:3 aspect ratio, making it feel closer to a small iPad mini than an extra-tall phone. Content scales proportionally, ensuring seamless transitions between folded and unfolded states.

Additionally, these screens support ProMotion, feature Always On functionality, and blast up to 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. To combat common foldable drawbacks, the inner display features a multilayer lamination design that keeps it flat.

It employs a premium nano-texture finish alongside a custom polymer cover layer. This specialized coating provides up to 40 percent higher stiffness than typical industry alternatives, effectively minimizing both glare and crease visibility.

Later this year, Apple plans to introduce Apple Pencil with USB-C support for the handset. This will allow users to take notes, sketch, or mark up documents directly on either of the two displays.

Real-World Performance and iOS 27

Powering this ambitious hardware is the formidable new A20 Pro chip, paired with an integrated C2 cellular modem and up to 12GB of RAM. Taming the processor's thermal output within such a tight chassis required an advanced thermal management system. This cooling setup is built around a custom-designed vapor chamber to deliver pro-level performance.

Keeping the lights on is a dual-battery architecture designed to deliver reliable all-day battery life, utilizing a reported 4,883mAh battery setup. This capacity places it competitively against the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold's 4,806mAh battery and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra's 5,000mAh unit. However, it trails the massive capacities found in Chinese foldables, such as the Oppo Find N6's 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery and the Vivo X Fold6's 7,000mAh-equivalent cell.

For security, biometric authentication is seamlessly handled by a Touch ID sensor integrated directly into the side button. Apple opted for Touch ID instead of Face ID to accommodate the extreme thinness of the displays, marking a clear Pro-parity loss compared to the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple Watch unlock remains available as an effortless alternative.

On the software front, iOS 27 is reimagined to remain familiar while adapting to the versatile ways users interact with the hardware. The operating system shifts Lock Screen controls, the Dock on the Home Screen, and app navigation to the side to cleverly maximize vertical screen space. The Dynamic Island is also redesigned to fit vertically on the side of the outer and inner displays, expanding to show Live Activities and alerts.

Early hints of this software overhaul were discovered by product designer Sam Henri Gold, who found references in the iOS 27 framework to variables named "foldState" and "angleDegrees." Unfolding the phone prompts the OS to present two Home Screen pages simultaneously, complete with a vertically scrolling Today View pinned to the left side. Users can easily multitask with two apps side by side, enabling immersive productivity on the go.

As you fold or rotate the chassis, the interface seamlessly adapts its content layout to match your orientation. The status bar includes a circular, flexible system that nestles into the corner of the screen, showing Wi-Fi, cellular strength, and battery. Rounding out the software experience, deeply integrated Apple Intelligence and Siri AI provide users with powerful, context-aware assistance.

Advanced Camera System and Pricing

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the dual rear camera system, which works in tandem with specialized front and inner lenses. Serving as the primary shooter is a 48MP Fusion Main camera equipped with sensor-shift optical image stabilization and a fast aperture. This lens offers zero shutter lag and an integrated 2x optical-quality Telephoto capability, though the device lacks a dedicated telephoto lens entirely.

The lack of a dedicated telephoto lens is a notable omission compared to competitors and Apple's own conventional flagships. The iPhone 17 Pro features a dedicated telephoto, as do leading 2026 foldables like the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold (5x telephoto) and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra (3x telephoto). Other rivals boast even higher specs, such as the Honor Magic V6's 64MP periscope lens, the Vivo X Fold6's 50MP Zeiss APO telephoto, and the Huawei Mate X7's 50MP telephoto macro.

Sitting alongside the primary lens is a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera capable of macro photography. It pulls identical specs to the setup found on current iPhone 18 Pro models. The main camera benefits from a new computational image pipeline for sharp details, and users can capture in a 24MP default for incredible image quality at manageable file sizes.

Handling video calls on the outer display is a Center Stage front camera that automatically takes photos and videos in any orientation. Users do not have to rotate the iPhone for landscape selfies. Meanwhile, an innovative new FaceTime camera remains completely hidden beneath the expansive inner display until you actually need it for hands-free calls.

This flexible form factor unlocks incredibly unique photography tricks that are not possible on any other iPhone. Photographers can activate Duo Preview to give subjects a live viewfinder feed on the outer display, helping them check their framing. Users can also take a selfie with the higher-resolution rear cameras while previewing the shot on the outer screen.

Parents might prefer the clever Kid Cue feature, which plays animations from Peanuts on the external screen to grab a child's attention before snapping a shot. The new Smart Take feature utilizes on-device AI models running on the A20 Pro to analyze scenes in real time and automatically capture photos when subjects pose. Additionally, Duo FaceTime lets people in the room join a video call on the outer display, so everyone can share the moment without crowding one screen.

Creators can capture breathtaking 4K120 fps video in Dolby Vision using the main camera, opening the door for gorgeous slow-motion effects by adjusting playback speed. Users can apply Cinematic effects after capture at up to 60 fps. Furthermore, Audio Mix introduces new algorithms that deliver higher-quality voices and can cleanly isolate music.

All of this folding technology comes at a premium cost. Current estimates suggest the iPhone Duo will start around $1,999 for the 256GB version and could approach $2,399 or even $3,000 for a fully equipped 2TB model.
