Google has officially invited the media to an in-person Googlebook preview event in New York City scheduled for September 15, 2026. According to Chrome Unboxed, Google leadership is slated to detail a brand-new computing platform during the keynote. The presentation will explore its underlying software architecture and share a vision for bringing together ChromeOS-style web productivity with Android’s native codebase.
Kicking off this ecosystem are Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, serving as the first five hardware partners. The first devices from these manufacturers are expected to arrive this fall. Behind the scenes, the company is currently testing the new software, known as Aluminium OS, on development boards featuring MediaTek Kompanio 520 and 12th Gen Intel Alder Lake processors. Because of this testing, existing Chromebooks with these chips could be eligible for the update.
Hardware Leaks and 'Aluminium OS' Details
A massive leak recently exposed the full press image set for the upcoming Lenovo Googlebook 15. Shared by Digital Citizen, these renders give us our clearest look yet at Google’s next-generation desktop computing effort and its overall design. The leak suggests an official reveal is expected at IFA in September for this Lenovo Googlebook 15.
Showcasing the laptop's physical design and new "Googlebook" branding, the images reveal an Android-powered desktop OS. Poring over leaked renders reveals that both the Lenovo Googlebook 15 and an unannounced ASUS model sport Google’s distinctive Glowbar. They also feature hardware controls designed specifically around Gemini.
Zooming in on the Lenovo unit highlights a dedicated hardware Gemini key marked with a stylized "G". This AI shortcut sits between the Fn and Alt keys and replaces the traditional Windows key. The Caps Lock key also features a launcher toggle from the Chromebook era. Rounding out the keyboard, the top row houses a bunch of OS and accessibility shortcuts spread across 14 function keys, though there is no number pad.
Aligning Hardware and Software Timelines
Google's launch spree will continue into September, when it is expected to officially unveil its first Googlebook laptops. This aligns with Google's ongoing strategy to better synchronize its hardware and software ecosystems. Previously, Google highlighted the way its phones use new features in Android 14, concentrating on AI-based software alongside notable hardware updates like the Tensor G3 AI-accelerator in the Pixel 8 Pro. That device also featured improved screen brightness, new cameras, and a temperature sensor.
Looking ahead to future software generations, moving the major release forward to Q2 will let Google better align with the schedule of device launches across its ecosystem. This shift means more devices can get the major release of Android sooner. This will hopefully mean next year’s Google Pixel 10 series will launch with Android 16 instead of Android 15. While the Google Pixel 10 series will have exclusive software features not found in Android 16, it remains nice to know what new Android features will be present on the new hardware.
