The updated subscription also adds access to the new Gemini Omni video model and other AI-powered tools announced at Google I/O 2026.
Google just slashed the price of its AI Plus subscription to $5 a month while doubling its storage—a clear shot across the bow in the consumer AI price war.
The AI Plus plan now costs $5 per month, down from its previous $8 price tag. The subscription also includes 400GB of cloud storage, a jump from the previous 200GB. The update was confirmed by Vikas Kansal, Google's Product Lead for Gemini AI subscriptions.
The AI Plus plan, which launched in January of this year, was Google's lower-cost entry point for its premium AI. Subscribers get access to powerful models like Gemini 3 Pro, Nano Banana Pro, and Deep Research, albeit with stricter usage limits than the top-tier AI Pro plan.
Following last month's Google I/O 2026 conference, the plan has been beefed up with several new features:
AI-powered email tools to streamline inbox management.
The combination of a lower price, doubled storage, and new features makes the subscription a much easier sell for consumers looking to boost their productivity and creativity. Google is clearly betting that a lower barrier to entry will expand its paid user base.
For existing AI Plus subscribers, the transition is seamless. Kansal stated the extra storage will appear in accounts within days, and the new price will be reflected on the next billing cycle. New users can sign up immediately.
This move positions Google to compete fiercely with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic for the mainstream user. The real question, however, is whether a $5 subscription can finally convert the millions of free AI users into paying customers.
