It only took years of watching Apple users get the VIP treatment, but Google is finally giving Android Auto drivers a basic dashboard feature. Google Maps is currently rolling out a live speedometer for its native in-car platform. The highly requested tool is officially out of hiding and entering a limited testing phase.

Beta Testing Underway

A handful of Reddit users in Canada recently spotted the speedometer popping up on their car displays. The feature showed up in the Google Maps beta app version 26.29.02.946673643. While a few lucky drivers have it, the test pool is still incredibly small.

A Staggered Feature Timeline

The strangest part of this rollout is how long Android Auto users were left in the dark. Google handed Apple's CarPlay a speedometer two years ago in July 2024. Standard Android smartphone users have had it even longer, and Google-owned Waze has natively supported it for years.
