YouTube is officially changing how views are counted on non-Shorts content. The impending update was recently detailed in a report by Joe Maring for Android Authority, published on August 17, 2026.
This revised policy will take effect globally beginning August 24, 2026. Under the new rules, a view will now be counted the moment a video begins to play.
How the New Metric Works
Currently, the platform only counts "engaged views" as a valid view. This requirement means the viewer watched the video for at least 30 seconds.
Starting on August 24, 2026, it will start counting views the moment a video begins to play. From August 24 onward, a view on YouTube will count as soon as the video starts.
This adjustment brings the platform in line with the approach used on other networks like TikTok and Instagram. It is also the exact same metric that was applied to YouTube Shorts last year.
The shift essentially means that YouTube is now treating regular videos the same way as Shorts. The company previously removed the minimum play time requirement for that specific format in 2025.
Creator Impact
The company explained that the decision came directly from user feedback regarding analytics. Highlighting the motivation behind the adjustment, YouTube stated: "However, we've heard that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure, which is why we're making this update!".
Your YouTube views are about to go up, but there is a catch. Creators should not expect this change to make it easier to join the YouTube Partner Program.
Broader Industry Shifts
This update occurs during a wider period of transition across major social platforms and shifting digital advertising landscapes. For example, since Elon Musk purchased the social network in 2022, advertisers have been concerned about their ads appearing on the platform.
These industry anxieties have escalated for brands and creators alike. This is especially true since the network's content moderation policies have been significantly loosened over time.
