If you’ve spent the last year dragging your thumbs through X's notoriously sluggish Android app, relief has finally arrived. Elon Musk's social network just dropped a completely rebuilt, ground-up version of its Android client to fix a historically miserable mobile experience.

For years, the Android version has choked on basic tasks, lagging severely behind its sleek iOS counterpart. Now available on the Play Store, this fresh update promises a radical overhaul to everything from simple scrolling to notification delivery.

Head of Product Nikita Bier didn't mince words, calling the release one of the largest engineering projects in the company’s history. To pull it off, Bier assembled a dedicated Android "dream team" back in August 2025 to rip out the platform's rotting foundation.

A Clean Tech Stack

Rather than slapping another band-aid on legacy code, developers rewrote the entire application using a clean Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack. For the end user, this means no more janky scroll-stuttering—just smooth, native UI rendering that actually feels like it belongs on a modern smartphone.

This overhaul wasn't just a vanity project. Bier noted that October 2025 marked one of X's biggest weeks ever for Android downloads, suddenly making modernization a top priority.

But the new architecture is also about developer velocity. "It will enable us to build new features at lightning speed," Bier posted on the platform.

Fixing a Broken Foundation

Nobody can deny that Android users have endured severe platform neglect. At one point last year, the core app was so fundamentally broken it couldn't even load X posts from external links.

By finally squashing these glaring bugs, X is desperately trying to win back eyeballs in global markets where Android reigns supreme. It’s a necessary peace offering to users who abandoned the platform out of sheer technical frustration.

Still, the launch is very much a work in progress—especially for anyone clutching an older handset. The engineering team is currently ironing out performance bottlenecks on legacy devices, and several flagship features didn't make the initial cut.

Live audio via Spaces is totally absent right now, though X promises it will arrive soon alongside a new video editor, cashtags, custom timelines, and a react-with-video function.
