It looks like Meta is finally tired of ceding the desktop video conferencing market to Zoom and Google Meet. In a major update to its encrypted chat platform, WhatsApp is rolling out direct web calling, live call handoffs between devices, and a noticeable bump in media quality.
What was once just a quick way to text friends is rapidly morphing into a genuine threat to traditional enterprise communication tools.
Full-Featured Web Calling Arrives
Finally bringing its browser interface up to speed with its mobile apps, WhatsApp Web now supports direct audio and video calls. Whether you are dialing a single contact or hosting a massive group chat, the feature works natively without requiring a desktop app download.
The browser experience packs in the heavy-hitting features you would expect from a dedicated workplace tool like Slack Huddles. Screen sharing is fully supported during meetings, on-screen reactions are present, and a dedicated Calls tab keeps track of your entire history.
By keeping everything end-to-end encrypted and entirely within the browser, Meta is making it dead simple to bypass corporate IT restrictions. Anyone trapped on a locked-down work laptop that blocks third-party app installations can now jump straight into a meeting with a single click.
Uninterrupted Call Transfers
Device continuity is also getting a much-needed upgrade. Instead of the awkward dance of hanging up on your phone just to answer on your laptop, the new Call Transfer capability lets you toss an active group session between hardware setups instantly.
Upgraded Security and Call Quality
Rounding out the update are three distinct tweaks focused on meeting management and raw media fidelity:
- Waiting Rooms: Borrowing heavily from the Zoom and Google Meet playbook, meeting organizers now have tighter control over who enters the room. Whenever a host generates a call link with "Require approval to join" enabled, attendees are parked in a virtual holding area until explicitly admitted.
- QuickHD: Nobody likes staring at a pixelated mess while waiting for the connection to stabilize. This tweak forces high-definition video to kick in instantly during the first few seconds of a call connecting.
- Noise Suppression: Upgraded audio processing aggressively strips away background interference. Whether you are dialing in from a busy coffee shop or a noisy street, voices should cut through the chaos clearly.
Meta is pushing these changes out gradually over the coming weeks. While it might take a bit of time to reach every user globally, the overarching strategy is clear: WhatsApp is no longer content being just a mobile messaging app; it wants to be the default communication hub for both your personal life and your workday.
