Hailing an autonomous cab just got a lot more conversational, as Waymo officially brings Google's Gemini integration to its Ojai self-driving cars. Self-driving vehicles have long been popular with introverts who prefer a quiet ride without a driver, and Waymo is now attempting to elevate that passenger experience even further.
Starting today, August 20, 2026, passengers catching a ride in the company's US robotaxis can chat with the AI assistant while on the move. Ahead of this public rollout, the company debuted the feature alongside a slick, redesigned user interface tailored specifically for the Ojai fleet.
Gemini lives neatly as an overlay at the bottom of the in-car display, springing to life with a tap of a button in the lower-right corner. The AI easily handles contextual questions, letting riders hunt down the best nearby coffee shop or ask for the backstory of a monument whizzing by the window.
Along with pointing out local hotspots, the digital helper serves up basic journey information, Waymo education, and answers general trivia. The system is programmed to use personalized greetings featuring the rider's first name and can access contextual data, such as a user's total number of Waymo trips.
Managing the in-cabin climate is now as simple as telling the system to "turn the A/C to 65" or adjusting the music. Voice commands even extend to requesting the vehicle to pull over if a rider needs to end the trip early.
However, researcher Jane Manchun Wong noted that Gemini notably lacks access to volume control, route changes, seat adjustment, and window controls. If asked to perform an unsupported task, the bot is instructed to reply with aspirational phrases, such as, "It's not something I can do yet."
Despite these new voice controls, the AI operates completely siloed from the actual Waymo Driver system. Gemini lacks access to real-time driving data and cannot hijack or alter any part of the vehicle's routing or physical movement. The system is strictly directed to maintain a clear identity separation; if asked how it sees the road, the AI will specify that "The Waymo Driver uses a combination of sensors," rather than claiming it drives the car itself.
Waymo is pairing the smart assistant with a fresh triple-screen user interface, marking its first major design update in years. Touch targets are now significantly larger compared to the displays found in Waymo's older Jaguar I-Pace vehicles.
Whoever grabs the rear-right seat gets the VIP treatment, complete with detailed controls right on their display. A choreographed tri-screen experience ensures information varies based on which seats are occupied, leaving the remaining screens to show an ambient media player or a stripped-down trip status.
Anyone craving a quieter commute can trigger a new "Calm Mode"—also referred to as a "Zen mode"—which dims the screens and limits trip information for a bit of in-transit relaxation without distraction. Earlier code findings from Wong hinted that the system was built primarily to answer questions and keep riders reassured, using simple, jargon-free language limited to one to three sentences.
When asked about feature testing in the past, Waymo spokesperson Julia Ilina noted the team is "always tinkering with features," though some ideas "may or may not come to our rider experience."
This robotaxi upgrade perfectly aligns with a wider automotive push for Google, tracing back to its initial launch of cars with Google built-in back in 2020. Gemini is also slated to hit roughly 4 million General Motors vehicles from the 2022 model year and newer, sweeping across brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. Eventually, future automotive updates should weave the AI even deeper into the Google ecosystem, integrating it directly with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home.
