Toyota is finally cooking up something wild, and we just caught our first real glimpse of it. A mysterious mid-engine coupe prototype—widely rumored to be either the next-generation MR2 or a resurrected Celica—was spotted carving up a Japanese test track yesterday.
Viral footage posted to X on July 22 by user @You_SuiKoyoAZ reveals a heavily modified, Frankenstein-like test mule. The two-door coupe squats low with a menacing stance, wearing borrowed Yaris lighting alongside deep bumpers and massive fender extensions. A fixed swan-neck rear wing leaves no doubt about its track-focused intentions.
Need proof of its mid-engine layout? Just look at the massive cooling intakes slashed into the rear fenders and the deep hood vent up front. The car's aggressive proportions are a dead ringer for the 2023 Toyota FT-Se concept, a vehicle industry insiders swore was our first look at a modern MR2.
A Major Shift to All-Wheel Drive
Enthusiasts remember the original MR2 as a featherweight, rear-wheel-drive scalpel. But this upcoming GR model marks a massive, paradigm-shifting departure for Toyota's performance division. Reports indicate the new sports car will utilize a mid-engine, all-wheel-drive layout packed with Torsen limited-slip differentials at both ends.
In this radical configuration, the transmission sits at the rear while a prop shaft shoots power back up to the front axle. Engineers familiar with the GR Yaris Concept M racer—an early test bed for this exact architecture—say the system is incredibly dynamic. It can send 100 percent of the grunt to the rear tires, or shift up to 50 percent forward when grip demands it.
Toyota hasn't confirmed if this track weapon will be strictly locked to an 8-speed automatic. We're still holding out hope they throw purists a bone with a manual gearbox.
The New G20E Powertrain
Hauling around an advanced all-wheel-drive system requires serious firepower, which explains why Toyota isn't recycling old hardware. Instead, they are dropping in the brand-new G20E powertrain. This 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder will eventually replace the scrappy 1.6-liter triple currently powering the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.
Toyota claims this new 2.0-liter block is stronger and tighter than their current 2.4-liter turbo. Expect big numbers. Standard applications should deliver a stout 300 horsepower and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Step up to the high-performance variants, and those figures reportedly explode to 400 horsepower and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft).
Will this widebody prototype ultimately wear the legendary MR2 badge, or will it resurrect the Celica nameplate? Nobody outside of Toyota knows for sure. The automaker is keeping its mouth shut regarding yesterday's track sightings and any potential production timeline.
