Super Heavy Booster Meets Explosive End
The V3 architecture just claimed its second Super Heavy booster in a highly visible fashion.
Though the massive vehicle pushed much deeper into its planned flight sequence than past attempts, a critical system faltered at the very end. The booster failed to light all the necessary engines required to execute a simulated, controlled landing burn over the ocean.
The result was a brutal, faster-than-expected water impact followed by a massive explosion that sent plumes of steam and debris into the air.
This fiery end marks the second critical failure for the booster under the ambitious V3 architecture. Back during the inaugural Starship V3 flight in May, the booster violently tore itself apart right at the point of stage separation.
Getting this specific rocket off the pad was a painstaking struggle in itself.
Just over a week prior, an aborted attempt brought the countdown to a jarring halt right after ignition when multiple rocket engines failed to start properly. SpaceX engineers were forced to quickly swap out six different engines on the vehicle ahead of Friday's flight.

The spectacular ocean impact instantly sent heavy ripples through SpaceX's freshly established public valuation.
This was the very first Starship launch since the aerospace giant went public last month in June 2026. That highly anticipated milestone shattered previous financial records, firmly establishing itself as the largest initial public offering in stock market history.
Now, public retail and institutional investors are discovering just how little stomach they actually have for SpaceX's traditional "fly, fail, fix" methodology.
Private venture capitalists spent years happily funding explosive iterative testing, knowing that shattered steel often leads to engineering breakthroughs. Wall Street, however, strictly demands predictable, quarter-over-quarter success to justify high valuations.

The stock chart heavily reflects this violent culture clash between engineering reality and investor expectations. Following the launch abort last week, shares took a significant hit, kicking off a steady downward trend.
This continued a brutal slide from a post-IPO peak of over $200 down to a sobering $115 close on Friday. After-hours trading only extended the financial pain. SpaceX shares shed another 2% following the news of the booster loss before eventually clawing back a fraction of the dip by the end of the session.
Upper Stage Progress and Satellite Deployment
Despite the fiery booster loss, the highly anticipated mission wasn't a total wash.
The Starship V3 upper stage nailed its ascent without a hitch and cleanly deployed the massive new V3 Starlink payload into the vacuum of space. It is a major step up from the problematic May flight, which saw the upper stage violently lose a rocket engine mid-operation and struggle to maintain its trajectory.
This particular deployment was designed strictly as a structural test of the payload bay doors and release mechanisms. Because the current iteration of Starship still lacks the capability to reach a stable, sustainable Earth orbit, these newly released third-generation satellites are doomed.
They are destined for a fiery death, burning up entirely in the Earth's atmosphere roughly 20 minutes after slipping from the payload bay.
