Sony's compact cinema camera lineup just got significantly more crowded, signaling a strategic shift in how the company approaches high-end video production.
The newly launched FX5 brings a long-requested, heavily anticipated feature to the Sony ecosystem: open gate recording. Alongside this workflow upgrade, the camera packs a 16.6MP full-frame fully-stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and dedicated hardware tailored specifically for AI processing.
Interestingly, Sony isn't killing off the popular FX3 that originally debuted in 2021. Instead, the FX5 sits in a distinctly higher pricing tier alongside its siblings.
This creates a premium option for professional shooters needing more advanced capture capabilities, all without forcing them to jump to a full-sized, heavier shoulder rig.
Next-Generation Sensor Architecture
The FX5 is built entirely around a newly developed 16.6MP full-frame fully-stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor.
By layering the pixel array directly over the signal processing circuits and memory, this stacked architecture drastically improves sensor readout speeds. The FX5 caps out its open gate capture at an impressive 5K at 60 frames per second. Shooters looking for aggressive slow-motion capabilities can step down the resolution to 4K to easily hit 120fps.
