A Lifeline for the Back Catalog
Earlier this month, Sony announced it would stop producing new physical games in January 2028, signaling a major shift toward an all-digital future. In a crucial follow-up, the company has clarified what this means for the games already on shelves.
The Future of Retail
Sony's message also laid the groundwork for a disc-less retail future. The company noted its disc ordering process will change, an expected move given its investment in repurposing its Austrian disc factory to produce optical microlenses.
To keep a presence in stores, Sony will "provide publishers with the opportunity to release new games at retail using digital codes." This suggests a future where game cases contain download vouchers instead of discs, a model already tested with some smaller releases.
While this addresses concerns about game availability being limited to Sony's digital storefront, it reinforces the industry's inevitable pivot away from physical media. For collectors, it means the era of owning a new game on a disc has a firm expiration date.
