The Next Generation of Laptop Displays
Ever tried to edit a photo or watch a dark movie scene on your laptop while sitting next to a sunlit window? It usually involves a lot of squinting. Samsung wants to fix that with a new tandem OLED laptop display that hits a blinding peak brightness of 1,600 nits.
Samsung is already shipping these high-brightness panels to hardware partners. Expect to see them pop up soon in premium machines from OEMs like Asus, Dell, and inevitably Samsung's own Galaxy Book lineup.
VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 Certification
VESA created this tier to set a much higher bar for high dynamic range (HDR) laptop screens. It demands a massive 40% increase in brightness compared to the previous highest spec.
To qualify, displays have to do more than just flash a bright image for a millisecond. They must reliably hold up to 1,400 nits under rigorous testing conditions.
Strict Pixel Ratio Testing
Earning that True Black 1400 badge is no walk in the park. The certification dictates exactly how a display handles both blinding light and total darkness at the exact same time:
- Peak White Luminance: White pixels must blast out at least 1,400 nits of brightness.
- On Pixel Ratio: This 1,400-nit benchmark must be sustained at a 10% On Pixel Ratio. That means 10% of the screen's pixels display pure white while the rest operate differently.
- Deep Black Performance: Simultaneously, the inactive or black pixels must maintain a brightness level of 0.0005 nits or lower.
Impact on the Laptop Market
By holding black levels at an inky 0.0005 nits while pushing highlights up to 1,400 nits during testing (and 1,600 nits peak overall), this screen completely changes the game for HDR content. Shadows in horror movies won't look like a washed-out gray, and bright explosions in HDR games will genuinely pop against pitch-black backgrounds.
This puts immediate pressure on the rest of the industry. Apple’s mini-LED MacBook Pros have ruled the mobile HDR space for a while now, but OLED's pixel-level dimming combined with this kind of raw brightness is a potent threat.
With Samsung already shipping these displays in mid-2026, the upcoming holiday release cycle is going to be incredibly competitive. If you've been holding off on buying a premium laptop for better screen tech, your patience is about to pay off.
