At the ongoing IMID 2026 expo today, Samsung Display unveiled several new OLED technologies. The centerpiece of the presentation was a 16-inch OLED laptop panel boasting a massive 300Hz refresh rate.
To pair with that speed, the screen also features a crisp 2.5K resolution. Beyond the new laptop screen, the presentation included a 7.6-inch foldable OLED panel designed with a wider viewing angle.
This breakthrough in laptop display technology bridges a gap between OLED's visual fidelity and the extreme speeds typically reserved for other panel types. There is no question that OLED panels offer superior looks and absolutely vibrant colors. However, competing LCD panels have historically provided a better experience for playing the latest PC games due to higher refresh rates.
Some premium gaming machines, such as the Razer Blade 18 and the Alienware Aurora 18, already feature blisteringly fast 300Hz laptop displays. The Aurora 18 pairs its 18-inch 2560 x 1600 300Hz display with a fast Intel Core Ultra 9-275HX CPU, 32GB of RAM, and an RTX 5070 GPU. Currently, the 18-inch model does not yet feature an OLED option.
Meanwhile, the Alienware 16-inch features a 300Hz display that is technically better, though the machine runs a little hotter than the 18-inch. Observers testing 300Hz laptop screens note that human eyes do not see in exact frames per second. Our brains focus more on contrast and motion than the raw speed of the screen updates.
In practice, it can be difficult to notice the difference between a 120Hz display and a 300Hz display. This is simply because users are not focusing on how quickly the image updates.
Pushing the Refresh Rate Ceiling
A screen's refresh rate dictates the number of times per second the display can update, and a higher limit helps reduce motion blur and visual artifacts like screen tearing. Tearing occurs when the rate at which the graphics card feeds the display differs significantly from the display’s refresh rate. While 60Hz is the minimum desired for comfort, 75Hz is comfortable for most non-gaming uses.
Most OLED displays, like TVs and desktop monitors, typically come with 60Hz refresh rates, with some high-end panels getting up to a 120Hz refresh rate. These faster panels haven't made it down to OLED laptops yet, which are still relatively new themselves.
For achieving stratospheric refresh rates, TN remains the dominant technology, with 300Hz or 360Hz options currently leading the market. However, IPS panels can now hit 240Hz, meaning gamers face far fewer tradeoffs when choosing them than they used to.
In the desktop market, extreme-refresh OLEDs are already becoming a reality. Samsung’s flagship 49-inch Odyssey G9 ultrawide OLED gaming monitor supports a 240Hz refresh rate alongside a fast 0.03ms response time. It also features an 1800R curve and a 32:9 aspect ratio, yielding a 5120 x 1440 resolution.
Competitors are also pushing speeds, with both the 32-inch Gigabyte Aorus FO32U2 and the Acer Predator OLED monitors hitting 240Hz at 4K resolutions. Another option is Asus’ 27-inch ROG Strix XG27AQDMG 1440p 240Hz OLED.
Typical desktop monitors usually run between 250 to 350 nits, while HDR screens can run as high as 1,600 nits. For most content, premium monitors reach about 250 nits of brightness, but HDR content can crank up to 1,000 nits. When it comes to contrast, anything above a 1,000:1 ratio is generally fine.
Laptop screens are different because they need to be viewable in direct sunlight. Therefore, they benefit from higher brightness levels even without HDR support.
While 300Hz and 240Hz panels target the ultra-premium gaming sector, more modest upgrades are arriving for standard users. Samsung Display is ramping up mass production of its new OLED laptop panels with a 90Hz refresh rate. This offers fans of OLED laptops a welcome 50% boost in frame rates over existing displays on the market.
