Samsung is reportedly jumping back into the PC chip game with GAIA, a dedicated AI accelerator that could put the company on a collision course with Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm. According to multiple reports from Korea, electronics giants HP and Lenovo are already testing prototypes.
The new chip is being developed by Samsung's LSI division—the same team behind the Exynos mobile processors. If successful, this initiative could finally place Samsung's own silicon inside its Galaxy Book laptops and potentially those of other major manufacturers.
GAIA: A New Approach to PC AI
Unlike the integrated Neural Processing Units (NPUs) found in current chips, GAIA is designed as a dedicated companion processor. Built on a 4nm-class process, its primary goal is to offload demanding on-device generative AI workloads from the main CPU and GPU.
Market Re-entry and Industry Implications
Reports suggest prototypes are already with HP in the US and Lenovo in China for performance validation. Mass production could begin as early as 2027, with the first GAIA-powered devices potentially arriving in late 2027 or early 2028.
Samsung is betting that future on-device AI will require more power than today's integrated NPUs can provide.
