Opera Launches "Neon," an Experimental Browser Where AI Does the Browsing For You
Opera has officially opened public access to Opera Neon, an experimental browser designed to fundamentally shift how users interact with the web. Moving beyond the standard model of passive page viewing, Neon introduces an "agentic AI" framework where autonomous agents perform complex tasks—like coding web apps or conducting deep research—on behalf of the user.
Previously available only to a closed "Founders" group since October 2, the browser is now accessible to the general public via a subscription model.
The Shift to Agentic Browsing
The core premise of Opera Neon is the transition from a passive tool to an active participant. Standard browsers are display engines; they render code so you can read or click. Opera Neon, however, is built around AI agents.
According to the company, these agents are capable of autonomously executing multi-step workflows. Instead of manually visiting travel sites, comparing prices, and booking flights, a user can deploy a "Do" agent to handle the entire booking process. Similarly, "Make" agents can generate websites or edit documents, while the specialized "ODRA" agent handles deep research, synthesizing information from multiple sources into a coherent report.
"Opera Neon is a product for people who like to be the first to the newest AI tech," said Krystian Kolondra, EVP Browsers at Opera. "It’s a rapidly evolving project with significant updates released every week."
One Subscription, Multiple Models
A significant friction point for AI power users is the fragmentation of the current ecosystem. Accessing the best tools often requires separate, costly subscriptions to OpenAI, Google, and other providers.
Opera Neon attempts to solve this with an LLM-agnostic engine that aggregates top-tier models into a single workspace. For a monthly fee of $19.90, subscribers get immediate access to:
-
Gemini 3 Pro
-
GPT-5.1
-
Veo 3.1
-
Nano Banana Pro
This aggregation strategy allows users to switch between models depending on the task at hand without managing multiple billing cycles or interfaces.
Community-Driven Development
Opera is positioning Neon explicitly as a "testing ground" rather than a polished mainstream product. The browser is intended for early adopters who want raw access to developing technology.
To facilitate this, the subscription includes access to an exclusive Discord community. This direct line to developers allows users to influence the product roadmap, test features before they are widely released, and provide feedback on the browser's evolution.
Availability and Pricing
Opera Neon is available for download now at operaneon.com. The service costs $19.90 per month.
For users who are not ready for a paid subscription, Opera clarified that its main browsers—Opera One, Opera GX, and Opera Air—will continue to provide free AI features through the existing Opera AI framework.
