The simple act of copying and pasting just got a much-needed security upgrade in the Opera browser. With the launch of Paste Protect, Opera is tackling clipboard hijacking and pastejacking attacks by monitoring your clipboard in real time for suspicious changes.

This new security tool is enabled by default, protecting users from a growing class of attacks that exploit one of the most common actions we perform on our computers.

Dual-Layered Clipboard Defense

Paste Protect works on two fronts to keep your clipboard secure. The first is "Hijack protection," a feature Opera has included since 2021 that stops other applications from secretly changing what you’ve copied [1].

Building on that foundation is the new "Injection protection." This system watches for any suspicious modifications to your clipboard. If it spots one, it instantly blocks access, alerting you with a popup and a red icon in the address bar [1].

Targeting Modern Threats Like ClickFix

To combat social engineering tricks like ClickFix, Opera added this new layer of security. These attacks often fool users into copying a seemingly safe command, only to paste it into a terminal and accidentally install malware [1, 4].

Clipboard attacks, also known as pastejacking, can also use malware called "clippers." These programs silently swap out legitimate data, like a bank account or crypto wallet address, with one belonging to an attacker [2, 4].

Imagine you copy a friend’s crypto address to send them funds. A clipper instantly replaces it with an attacker's address. You paste, hit send, and your money is gone forever.

Opera's feature specifically watches for sensitive information like IBANs and credit card numbers. After you copy such data, the browser monitors it for up to two minutes or until you paste, warning you if an outside app tries to alter it [3].

User Controls and Transparency

Opera ensures you stay in control. When Paste Protect blocks a potential threat, it shows you the first 120 characters of the intercepted content so you can see what was caught [1].

For developers or advanced users confident in their actions, the protection isn't a dead end. You can whitelist specific sites or force a copy by holding down the Ctrl+C key combination for five seconds [1].
