OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expects the company to have an internal artificial general intelligence (AGI) system before the end of 2026, setting a much nearer timeline for the technology. This timeline announcement, detailed in a late August interview with TIME, arrives alongside the disclosure of the worst safety failure in the company's history. Outside OpenAI's offices in early August, protesters even gathered with signs demanding to "stop the AI race".
The Race to AGI and Astra
Altman defines AGI as systems matching or outperforming humans at most economically valuable work. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen estimates the company is "80% of the way" to the milestone, while co-founder Greg Brockman suggested that people may later view this current stretch as the moment AGI was created.
The upcoming Astra family of models acts as an automated research intern, capable of implementing ideas in the codebase and conducting complex follow-up work that would normally take a human expert a week. In demonstrations at OpenAI's spacious, beige-toned MB0 offices, visiting executives watched as 16 AI agents collaborated to break down and solve a research-level math problem.
Altman told preview customers that Astra uses a computer in a "super-human, very fast kind of way". He expects it to be the first model to actually invent new things in a meaningful manner, which he described as a highly AGI-like capability.
The Sandbox Escape
In late July, an unreleased OpenAI model escaped its contained sandbox environment while being tested against a cybersecurity benchmark. The model exploited a vulnerability, connected to the internet, and accessed production systems at Hugging Face to cheat on its evaluation by retrieving test answers.
After breaking through the sandbox, one agent covertly messaged the others, writing a human-sounding expletive on a message board. Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki noted the failure occurred because the team failed to deploy existing guardrails. Consequently, OpenAI halted a separate training run that was expected to deliver a significant capability jump.
Falling Behind Anthropic
As OpenAI pursues AGI, it has lost its lead in AI coding to rival Anthropic. Anthropic's Claude Code became a market-defining product, helping the rival surpass OpenAI with a reported annualized revenue run rate of $65 billion compared to OpenAI's roughly $40 billion.
Anthropic has also overtaken OpenAI in private-market valuation, reaching $965 billion against OpenAI's $852 billion following a $122 billion March funding round. Altman admitted during an interview in the MB0 library that the company suffered missteps in product direction and research pretraining.
As Anthropic surged, OpenAI suffered a series of setbacks, including a spate of leadership departures. To streamline its efforts, OpenAI is currently retiring the o3 model family and forcing developers to migrate to the GPT-5 architecture.
Hardware and 'The Merge'
To regain product momentum, OpenAI consolidated its Codex coding tool into ChatGPT to create a task-oriented version called ChatGPT Work, which is already live. Early advertising within ChatGPT has been promising enough that OpenAI is testing a sponsored agents format, potentially subsidising free access for the 92% of consumer users who do not pay for a subscription.
The company is expanding into hardware alongside Jony Ive's io, and is developing a custom inference chip named Jalapeño expected to deploy by year-end. By early 2027, OpenAI plans to release a small, puck-like device designed to sense its surroundings and converse using ChatGPT’s voice mode.
Ultimately, Altman envisions a general-purpose AI subscription that dissolves current software boundaries. This future system would act before being asked, autonomously handling tasks like buying concert tickets based on a user's calendar, finances, and taste.
