OpenAI is moving its AI coding tools from the screen to the desktop. Meet the Codex Micro, a $230 hardware controller designed to give developers a physical command center for their AI agents.
A Command Center for AI Developers
This is OpenAI’s first piece of hardware, a compact device built specifically for power users of its Codex platform. The goal is to clean up the clutter of AI-assisted coding, pulling essential functions out of a desktop app and onto a dedicated controller.
Developed with the Canadian-Italian mechanical keyboard maker Work Louder, the limited-run product went on sale yesterday, July 15, for $230. It's available through Supply Co. while inventory lasts, though OpenAI hasn’t disclosed how many units were made.
At-a-Glance Status and Tactile Control
The heart of the Codex Micro is a set of six illuminated, frosted keys that offer a live view of what your Codex agents are doing. These "Agent Keys" glow different colors to show if a task is running, finished, needs your input, or has hit an error. This lets a developer monitor multiple AI assistants at once without constantly switching windows.
The device gives developers an array of customizable inputs, closely based on Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2. Thirteen mechanical switches serve as "Command Keys" for frequent actions like push-to-talk voice input, sending commands, or approving code. The package also includes 32 extra keycaps with Codex icons for a more personalized setup.
A small joystick can be programmed to launch common workflows with a flick of the thumb. A rotating dial lets users adjust an agent’s “reasoning level”—a clever way to control how much time and computing power it dedicates to a task. All of these controls are configured through the ChatGPT desktop app.
A Focused Debut, Separate from Future Hardware
OpenAI is stressing that the Codex Micro is a niche collaboration. It’s a distinct project, entirely separate from the company's more ambitious consumer hardware plans with former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
Rather than a play for the mass market, the Codex Micro is a clear signal from OpenAI. The future of professional coding is a human-AI partnership, and that partnership deserves its own dedicated hardware.
