Jeff Strain, renowned game developer and co-founder of ArenaNet, and his wife Annie are suing NetEase for a staggering $900 million. The lawsuit alleges that NetEase, the publisher behind titles like Marvel Rivals, spread false and damaging rumors about their game studio, Prytania Media, ultimately leading to its closure.

The Strains claim that NetEase, after investing in Prytania's subsidiary Crop Circle Games, began circulating rumors of financial fraud within Prytania. These rumors, allegedly originating from NetEase representatives, caused other investors to withdraw their support, effectively crippling Prytania and its subsidiaries. The studio's value plummeted from an estimated $344 million to near zero.

The lawsuit further contends that NetEase's actions stemmed from a desire to avoid scrutiny from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). The Strains allege NetEase aimed to keep its investment in Prytania “low profile” to circumvent U.S. regulations concerning foreign investments. This alleged evasion of compliance forms a central part of the Strains' argument.

NetEase has vehemently denied all allegations, labeling them as “wholly without merit.” The company has stated its intention to vigorously defend itself in court, emphasizing its commitment to ethical business practices and expressing confidence in its eventual vindication.
