Microsoft is officially giving its developer-optimized Windows experience a brand new name: Project Zenith. The software maker originally announced a similar developer-optimized Windows effort earlier this year during its annual Build conference. Billed as a "distraction-free Windows experience," the initiative aims to entice creators with a clutter-free operating environment.
Logan Iyer, CVP of Windows platform and developer at Microsoft, detailed the specific advantages of the new software ecosystem. "Project Zenith devices come with a preconfigured Windows setup for development and a set of tools curated for what developers reach for first," explains Iyer.
Hardware Requirements
The new Project Zenith is designed specifically to run on new, developer-focused devices. To successfully use this distraction-free Windows experience, users will need a highly capable and powerful system.
Specifically, the specialized software requires devices to be equipped with 64GB or more of unified memory. This 64GB of RAM serves as the absolute baseline for utilizing the clutter-free environment.
Local Model Execution
These steep hardware requirements tie directly into the system's intended technical capabilities. On these dedicated Project Zenith devices, developers will have the robust ability to run 30B+ parameter models entirely locally.
Furthermore, this massive local execution is completely unmetered. This dedicated local processing power is meant to significantly accelerate experimentation for developers. By removing metering and keeping these large-scale models directly on the device, Microsoft aims to help streamline the overall development process.
