Instead of forcing players to rely on bloated, locked-down manufacturer software, Keychron wants to replicate the wild success of open-source mechanical keyboards. ZGM will let tinkerers strip away unnecessary code, write custom polling logic, and squeeze every drop of performance out of their own hardware.
You can already peek at the official GitHub page for ZGM, though the actual firmware code won't drop until the first quarter of 2027. Developers are currently hammering out the documentation and design architecture to meet an ambitious production timeline.
Building on a Real-Time Foundation
At its core, ZGM leans on Zephyr—a real-time operating system (RTOS) heavily utilized for abstracting underlying hardware components. By piggybacking on this established framework, Keychron guarantees broad compatibility, ensuring the firmware can effortlessly scale across wildly different mouse designs.
Modularity is the ultimate goal here. Rather than tangling the code into an unreadable mess, the development team completely decoupled optical sensors, scroll wheels, switches, and lighting drivers into distinct layers. If a modder wants to rip out the default RGB driver to save processing cycles or swap in a totally different optical sensor, they can do it without rewriting the foundational code.
Everything circles back to raw speed and responsiveness. The firmware comes out of the box with baked-in optimizations to handle extreme sensor polling, ultra-fast wheel inputs, and instantaneous click processing.
