Successful GSLV Liftoff
Reporting from New Delhi, India’s space programme successfully notched a much-needed success early Friday morning with a new rocket launch. The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) lifted off on September 4 at 2:55 a.m. local time, deploying an advanced Earth observation satellite.
The launch occurred from the country's main spaceport in Sriharikota, an island located in southern India. Viewers around the world watched the event unfold through the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) official launch broadcast on YouTube. According to the livestream broadcast, the launch vehicle reached its designated orbit exactly 18 minutes after liftoff.
This mission provides a critical boost to ISRO, an agency recently rattled by setbacks to its space ambitions. Prior to this launch, the space program faced two consecutive failures with the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The PSLV had long served as the country's most successful workhorse rocket, and its back-to-back failures had cast serious doubts on its overall reliability.
Deploying the EOS-05 Payload
The GSLV successfully deployed the EOS-05, a heavy satellite weighing 2,367kg. This specific payload marks a major milestone, serving as India’s first imaging satellite explicitly designed for operations from a geosynchronous orbit.
Because a satellite placed in this specific orbital path moves in precise sync with Earth’s rotation, it can continuously monitor the exact same geographic region. This deployment represents a significant step forward for the country's ongoing space ambitions and Earth monitoring capabilities.
“GSLV has successfully and precisely injected the advanced Earth observation satellite in the intended and required orbit,” stated ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan following the deployment.
Steadying the Launch Cadence
This mission marks the GSLV’s second consecutive success since July 2025. During that previous successful flight, the heavy-lift rocket accurately placed the jointly developed NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite into orbit.
The successful flight on September 4 helps steady India’s launch cadence moving forward. Following the precise deployment of the EOS-05, ISRO aims to maintain its operational momentum.
According to local media reports, the space agency now plans to execute seven space launches by March 2027. The latest launch success provides a vital boost to India's overall space ambitions after previous launcher failures.
