Google Finally Adds Real-Time Status to the Pixel VPN Tile
If you’ve ever fumbled through menus just to check if your Pixel’s VPN is actually shielding your data on public Wi-Fi, Google is finally fixing that. The company has started rolling out a long-overdue update to the free VPN service built into Pixel smartphones, turning the Quick Settings tile from a simple shortcut into a live status indicator.
This change addresses a lingering frustration for power users since Google transitioned from the standalone VPN by Google One to its current integrated system. Previously, the tile was static, forcing you to long-press or dig into the system settings to verify whether your connection was secure. Now, the information you need is visible right from the notification shade.
One Tile, Four Specific States
The update replaces the repetitive "VPN by Google" text with four distinct operational states, allowing you to confirm your security status at a glance:
-
Connected: The tile appears as a filled rectangle with curved corners, confirming your traffic is encrypted.
-
Paused: The icon shifts back to a pill shape with a lighter shade.
-
Connecting…: Shows you that the system is actively trying to establish a secure tunnel.
-
Can’t connect: A clear warning that the service has failed or a network issue is blocking the connection.
Note that these labels only appear if you use the expanded 2x1 (two columns, one row) tile format. If you prefer the smaller 1x1 icon, you're out of luck—the smaller tile just doesn't have enough room for the extra text.
Availability and Setup
This improved interface is landing on the Pixel 7 and all subsequent models. Because this is a server-side switch managed by Google, you might not see the change immediately even if your app is fully updated.
While it’s a minor tweak in the grand scheme of Android, it’s a welcome bit of transparency for anyone who relies on a VPN for daily browsing. Just keep an eye on your Quick Settings over the next few days as the server-side rollout reaches more devices.
