In fact, Dell's latest hardware release is yet another attempt to match the MacBook Neo in the cheap laptop space, and it looks like a solid contender in the education-focused device market.
Within Dell's current product lineup, the newly revealed 14S is intentionally meant to sit below the recently launched XPS 13. As most other laptop models continue to climb in price across the industry, Dell is positioning the 14S to offer another decidedly affordable laptop option for budget-conscious consumers and students.
Design and Build
When it comes to physical aesthetics, the 14S stands out by arriving in four distinct and bold color choices. Shoppers can select from linen, which serves as a beige hue; dusty rose, offering a pink finish; washed denim, which provides a blue tone; and a striking velvet green.
This wide array of options makes the new student-focused laptop much more colorful than the traditionally styled XPS 13. The vibrant finishes represent a particularly bold color palette, especially for a Dell machine.
However, there are some physical tradeoffs when comparing the new device to Dell's higher-end hardware options. While it presents a bold visual statement across its four colors, the Dell 14S is not as thin or as light as the premium XPS 13.
Specs and Upgrades
For the internal components, the base model of the Dell 14S starts with 8GB of RAM and includes 256GB of internal storage out of the box. This entry-level configuration closely aligns with the laptop's goal of serving as an affordable, accessible entry point for students returning to the classroom.
Beyond that base configuration, the 14S offers practical hardware upgrades for those requiring more computing power. Just like its fancier brethren in the Dell lineup, the 14S can be configured with an upgraded 16GB of RAM.
Additionally, buyers looking to expand their file capacity can opt to increase the laptop's storage prior to purchase. Users can upgrade from the base model by selecting either a 512GB or a 1TB solid-state drive (SSD) to better accommodate their needs.
