CNN has officially launched its newest streaming endeavor, All Access, priced at $6.99 per month or $69.99 annually. The service, set to debut on October 28, aims to deliver a "comprehensive experience" for news consumption. But, one significant element is conspicuously missing from this new package: a full, 24/7 live feed of the flagship CNN cable news channel itself. It's a striking omission, especially for a news organization, and a decision drawing immediate scrutiny from both industry watchers and potential subscribers.
CNN's VP of Digital Products, Alex MacCallum, states, "This is an essential step in CNN's evolution, providing a comprehensive experience that meets how audiences consume news today." Yet, for many, the definition of "comprehensive" for a news streaming service still includes the ability to watch breaking news as it happens on the main channel. It's an expectation that All Access doesn't quite fulfill, instead offering only a "selection" of live programming.
So, if you're not getting the full live channel, what are you paying for? All Access does pack a substantial library of on-demand content. Subscribers will gain access to over 1,000 hours of programming from CNN's acclaimed Originals library, including popular series and CNN Films a day after they air on TV. Expect a variety of video-on-demand content, special features, and exclusive live events. Moreover, the All Access tier includes unlimited access to all CNN.com articles and subscriber-only digital content, effectively bundling what was previously CNN's $3.99 "Basic" digital subscription. That Basic tier, by the way, remains available but offers articles only, no video.
For pay-TV subscribers, there's a silver lining: the service will be free. However, they won't automatically get the digital content like articles and interactive features that All Access subscribers receive. It's a peculiar split of benefits.
The $6.99 monthly price point is interesting. An annual subscription goes for $69.99, but there's an early bird special: $41.99 for the first year if you sign up before January 5th, 2026. That's a decent discount, no doubt. But is it enough to entice subscribers when the core live CNN channel isn't there?
Initial reactions from both experts and the public are, well, mixed. Media analysts, while acknowledging the promotional pricing is attractive and the Originals library strong, still point to the absence of the live feed as a potential Achilles' heel. One analyst called it a "missed opportunity in a live-news hungry market." On social media, users are already expressing frustration. "Why pay $7 for 'selected' live when I can get full CNN on cable, or other news for free?" asked one user on X. Many feel like they're being asked to pay for a partial experience, an echo that's hard to ignore.
This isn't CNN's first foray into a direct-to-consumer video subscription service, and the echoes of its ill-fated CNN+ are loud. Launched in 2022, CNN+ was also $5.99 a month and notably lacked a full live CNN feed. It lasted a mere 32 days before being unceremoniously pulled. More recently, CNN Max, a 24/7 live news stream, was removed from HBO Max in anticipation of All Access. The critical difference this time around is the integration of digital article content and a much larger library of originals. But the fundamental question remains: can a CNN streaming service thrive without the full, unadulterated CNN live channel? It's a bold strategy. Let's see if it pays off.
