CarPlay has gained its fifth major AI chatbot app with the addition of Anthropic's Claude. Anthropic’s iPhone app adding CarPlay is the second AI chatbot app to be updated with support this week. This follows Meta AI's addition just days prior in August.
Apple introduced support for a new class of CarPlay apps—voice-based conversational apps—starting with iOS 26.4. The software update rolled out on March 24, 2026. This serves as the eleventh official category for CarPlay, joining previous platforms like audio, navigation, EV charging, parking, and quick food ordering.
This category allows developers of AI chatbot apps to extend their iPhone experiences to the vehicle dashboard. Crucially, they can do this without needing specific integration with automakers.
To use these new features, drivers need an iPhone 11 or newer running iOS 26.4. If your iPhone is running iOS 26.4, CarPlay will automatically support compatible AI apps once they are updated by their developers.
Users also need a strong and reliable internet connection for processing. This reliance makes your mobile data plan and hotspot setup more important than ever for in-car AI.
Claude and the Growing Roster of Chatbots
Anthropic had been a holdout among major AI companies regarding CarPlay integration. The updated Claude iPhone app allows drivers to view a list of recent chats to resume. Alternatively, users can initiate a new voice chat using Claude’s voice function.
Claude joins four other major AI chatbots already available on CarPlay. OpenAI’s ChatGPT was the first to launch on March 31, exactly one week after iOS 26.4 debuted.
The ChatGPT CarPlay experience is strictly voice-only, displaying no text or images on the screen. It requires users to tap the app to begin since there is no wake word. ChatGPT was followed by Perplexity, which came in a close second with its own voice mode experience, and Grok.
More recently, xAI-turned-SpaceXAI signaled Grok for CarPlay with a placeholder app before its full release. The Grok app allows users to see recent conversations, start new ones, and switch voices directly from the CarPlay interface. It also lets users mute the session temporarily without fully stopping it.
Meta AI was added just a few days before Claude. However, its CarPlay functionality appeared to be in limited testing during its initial rollout. Google Gemini is also supported within this new dashboard ecosystem for voice-only driving conversations.
The Road to Siri AI
These third-party AI additions arrive as Apple prepares its own significant updates. A dedicated Siri app and Siri AI are slated to join the CarPlay party starting with iOS 27 in September.
Installing the iPhone software update or upgrading to a new iPhone running iOS 27 will automatically add these new features to CarPlay. The iPhone software update is currently in beta ahead of its official launch this month.
Drivers can currently use popular third-party apps like iHeartRadio, Waze, Overcast, Zoom, and WhatsApp alongside these new conversational AI tools. Overall, CarPlay now works with over 120 popular iPhone apps.
Recent non-AI updates have further expanded the platform. The MLB iPhone app recently upgraded to add live game scores and preferred team radio feeds while respecting hide-scores settings.
The Weather Channel also recently introduced Storm Radar for CarPlay. The app provides drivers with satellite maps, precipitation layers, and automatic rerouting. It also delivers weather alerts along your route that refresh as you drive.
CarPlay is simultaneously seeing hardware-level audio enhancements. Volvo recently upgraded three SUVs to support Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos for Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. Additionally, Pioneer released a compatible aftermarket head unit with the same premium audio capabilities.
