Despite this strong recommendation for the 5GHz band, Apple's technical documentation acknowledges that 2.4GHz implementations can exist. Hardware capabilities ultimately determine which frequency the vehicle utilizes.
Addressing Common Wi-Fi Misconceptions
Because the system relies heavily on local wireless networks, user confusion is frequent. That distinction can make the common question "Can I use wireless CarPlay without Wi-Fi?" a little confusing.
While the iPhone must use a Wi-Fi connection to transmit the CarPlay interface to the dashboard, this is a localized device-to-device network rather than a standard internet-connected Wi-Fi router. The Wired CarPlay Alternative
For drivers who do not want to rely on wireless protocols, physical connections remain the standard alternative. Wired CarPlay carries the CarPlay session over USB instead of the car's Wi-Fi connection.
This direct link bypasses both the Bluetooth setup and the localized Wi-Fi transmission entirely. A typical wired setup might feature an iPhone mounted on a car dashboard displaying the Apple CarPlay connection screen while a driver securely holds the steering wheel.
