Key Features and Workflow
The biggest change in Audacity 4 is the move to non-destructive audio editing. Users can now trim an audio clip and easily recover the original audio simply by pulling it back out later. Unlike Audacity 3, where pasting and moving clips was restricted if other clips were in the way, audio clips can now overlap each other.
The update introduces new handles that allow users to quickly trim or stretch multi-selected clips. Users can also group clips together to simplify complex editing tasks. The clip envelope tool has been redesigned, allowing users to click to add a point and drag to shape it, while the waveform responds instantly.
Additionally, a new split tool lets users chop clips, and holding the shift key splits multiple clips simultaneously. Sample editing is also much cleaner in version 4, as there is no longer a separate draw mode. Users simply zoom into a clip until they can see the individual samples.
