Apple's ambitious plan to give AirPods Pro a pair of AI-powered eyes may have just been shelved, casting doubt on a key piece of its future strategy. The report comes from a leaker with a mixed track record, abruptly pumping the brakes on a product believed to be deep in development.
In a brief post on X today, prototype collector and leaker "Kosutami" claimed the project has been "suspended." The statement, which offered no further detail, is a sharp reversal from reports that suggested the innovative earbuds were nearing the finish line.
A Surprising Reversal
The project, reportedly in development for four years, aimed to integrate cameras directly into the AirPods Pro. According to earlier claims, these infrared cameras were not meant for photos but would instead feed visual information about the wearer's surroundings to an enhanced, AI-powered Siri.
This functionality was expected to be a core feature of "Apple Intelligence," letting Siri see what you see to offer smarter, context-aware help.
Context and Potential Hurdles
Apple was reportedly targeting a launch for the new AirPods Pro in the first half of 2026.
However, the release was said to be contingent on the development of the smarter version of Siri, which is currently in beta with iOS 27 and not expected for a wide release until September.
On top of that, Apple's operations teams were reportedly working to secure parts amid an industry-wide shortage of memory chips and other silicon. It’s unclear if supply chain issues played a role in the purported suspension.
The development of next-generation audio products, including a potential H3 chip for future AirPods, continues to be a focus for the company.
Evaluating the Source
"Kosutami" is primarily known as a collector of Apple hardware prototypes but has occasionally shared accurate inside information. The leaker correctly revealed the iPhone 16 Pro's metal-enclosed battery and offered an early look at Apple's FineWoven Apple Watch band.
However, their track record isn't perfect. Kosutami incorrectly claimed in August 2024 that new AirPods Pro 3 were imminent. Given this history, the claim should be treated with caution until confirmed by more established sources.
Until a more reliable source weighs in, one of Apple's most futuristic products is officially in limbo.
