Apple has several new HomePod features in development, based entirely on these new code references discovered in the audioOS 27 files, according to 9to5Mac's Chance Miller. The code explicitly supports arranging four full-sized second-generation HomePod speakers into a unified surround sound system. References in the software suggest the ability to tune for a setup with front-left, front-right, rear-left, and rear-right HomePods.

This four-speaker surround configuration references automatic room calibration, speaker-position mapping, timing adjustments, bass management, and EQ. It also includes dialogue enhancement and different processing modes for movies and music. For stereo content, the code suggests the ability to spatialize sound across all four speakers or limit traditional stereo playback to the two front speakers.

In addition, the new "Party Mode" feature applies a more diffuse sound field to stereo-paired HomePods. This spreads sound evenly across the room for an immersive listening experience, rather than optimizing playback for a single listening position. The Home app and Apple TV do not currently provide a way to configure four HomePods as a surround system.

Unreleased Hardware Identifiers

The beta software files also reference a new audio tuning system called "Forklift." This system combines two second-generation HomePods with two additional speakers that utilize an unidentified AID12007 hardware family. This identifier does not correspond to any existing HomePod models, suggesting it refers to a future HomePod mini, third-generation HomePod, or some other unreleased audio device.

September Hardware Event Details

Apple is holding an event on Wednesday, September 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. The event is set to feature the unveiling of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

While it was initially rumored that Touch ID may be coming to the Apple Watch this year, Gurman reiterated in his newsletter that he does not expect major design changes. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to look largely identical to the current Series 11 and Ultra 3 models.

Gurman also outlined that AirPods 5 will be released as early as this September. The new earbuds are expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a brand-new foldable iPhone. These devices are all anticipated to share the stage alongside the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 hardware.
