Redesigned Checkout Interface
Apple Pay is a go-to feature for iPhone users when shopping in stores, online, and in apps. Apple recently announced four new features that make the service even better, alongside one major retail expansion.
One of the most notable changes is the redesigned Apple Pay checkout interface introduced in iOS 27. The updated layout makes it much easier to switch between different cards during the checkout flow on websites and within applications. Users can now easily swipe between cards on the main Apple Pay checkout screen, or tap a card to view a comprehensive grid of all available payment options.
Additionally, the new design makes it easier to see vital information about individual cards. This includes details like rewards, current balances, pay later options, and more. Currently, iOS 27 is available in beta to developers and public beta users, with a full release scheduled for this fall.
American Express Rewards Integration
Apple and American Express recently announced a new partnership that lets you pay directly with American Express rewards points. When shopping online or in apps with an American Express card, users will see a new “Use Rewards” option displayed alongside their available Membership Rewards points balance.
This integration provides a seamless way to utilize accumulated points during the mobile checkout process. Shoppers can apply points to cover all or part of a purchase, directly within the Apple Pay checkout flow.
American Express points redeemed via Apple Pay are specifically valued at 0.7 cents each. For example, this means 10,000 points can be redeemed for $70 applied towards your purchase.
Tap to Share and Debit Management
In iOS 27, Apple is adding a new “Tap to Share” feature that integrates with Apple Pay on iPhone for in-store shopping. This feature, which Apple says will launch this fall, is an extension of Tap to Pay on iPhone.
With just a tap, customers can connect to a participating merchant’s iPhone for a personalized and faster purchase experience. This allows for the secure sharing of information, such as an email address, shipping address, and loyalty rewards details. Customers can also view items in their basket in real time to ensure discounts are applied before finalizing the transaction with Apple Pay.
Additionally, later this year, iPhone users will be able to manage their debit card balances directly in the Apple Pay interface. According to Apple, you will be able to use Apple Pay to add money to a supported debit card directly in Apple Wallet or while checking out.
Expanded Retail Support
Beyond software updates, Apple Pay is seeing significant retail adoption. Walmart has announced that it is finally starting to roll out support for Apple Pay. This development introduces a payment method that many feel should have happened years ago.
Walmart began deploying Apple Pay and broader contactless support this week in Arkansas. The retailer expects the launch to reach all stores in the United States by the end of this year. Furthermore, Apple Pay is also rolling out to Sam’s Club as part of this major initiative.
