Apple has added Meta AI to its growing list of Apple CarPlay chatbots, marking the fourth third-party AI to join the platform. The release arrives just before Apple introduces its own Siri AI update with iOS 27, which is slated for a September launch.
The Growing Roster of Dashboard AI
Since the launch of iOS 26.4 on March 24, 2026, Apple has permitted "voice-based conversational apps" within CarPlay. This marks the eleventh official category for the platform, which previously limited developers to apps strictly for audio, navigation, messaging, EV charging, parking, and quick food ordering.
This category officially enables third-party AI chatbot apps to function in the car, automatically supporting compatible AI apps once they are updated by their developers. Meta AI is the latest addition to the dashboard experience.
It follows earlier integrations, starting with ChatGPT on March 31, 2026, just one week after the iOS update. Since then, Perplexity and an upcoming Grok Voice mode have also joined the ecosystem. The latest version of Grok currently displays a placeholder message stating, “Grok Voice mode coming soon to CarPlay”.
Grok, which is already a built-in feature on Tesla vehicles, will soon bring its chatbot experience to almost every other car on the road via CarPlay. The Grok application is currently available for download on the App Store. Other prominent models like Claude are also noted as compatible options for voice-only conversations while driving.
These tools operate entirely via voice commands, as Apple’s developer guidelines prohibit onscreen text conversations or imagery. Instead, the CarPlay interface only displays onscreen buttons to mute or end the active conversation. Users can also view a basic list of recent conversations they have had with the AI.
Drivers must manually tap the app icon to initiate a chat, as the feature does not support wake words. Users need an iPhone 11 or newer running iOS 26.4 to access the functionality. Furthermore, drivers must have a strong and reliable internet connection from their phone's mobile data plan or hotspot setup to maintain these in-car AI features.
Siri AI Looms on the Horizon
While third-party developers build out the CarPlay chatbot category, Apple is preparing its native solution. Siri AI will debut with iOS 27, an iPhone software update that is currently in beta testing ahead of its official launch.
The official launch for iOS 27 is scheduled for a September event. Reports indicate that Google’s Gemini models will help power the new Siri capabilities in this upcoming software update later this year. Interestingly, Google has not shown signs of supporting CarPlay with its own standalone Gemini app, despite powering the new Siri.
Apple is also expected to launch a dedicated Siri app, which will presumably integrate with the CarPlay dashboard as well. Until then, drivers have multiple distinct third-party conversational assistants ready for the road.
