Built on TSMC's new 2-nanometer (2nm) process, the processor introduces a major architectural shift to mobile computing. Apple reportedly secured more than half of TSMC’s initial 2nm production capacity for this release, capitalising on TSMC's high-volume manufacturing that began in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Performance and A20 Pro Specs
The A20 Pro features a 6-core CPU design that includes four new efficiency cores and two new super cores. Apple claims these super cores are "desktop class" and "the fastest in any smartphone," delivering up to 20 percent faster speeds than previous generations. Graphics are handled by a redesigned 7-core GPU that provides up to 40 percent faster graphics performance alongside increased memory bandwidth.
To support complex on-device AI workloads, the A20 Pro includes a 32-core Neural Engine. This redesigned engine delivers twice the compute power of its predecessor, operates more efficiently, and now supports 8-bit floating point math.
Additionally, new neural accelerators built directly into the GPU double the FP8 performance, which Apple says helps the chip run large language models locally on the device. To support these massive data pipelines, Apple noted the chip ships with "the widest memory interface we've ever shipped in an iPhone."
Architecture and Thermal Design
The shift to the TSMC N2 process replaces the older FinFET transistor architecture with Gate-All-Around (GAA) nanosheet transistors. This new design wraps the gate around stacked horizontal channels on all four sides, which improves control over electrical current and reduces power leakage when inactive. According to TSMC, baseline N2 technology can either provide a 10 to 15 percent speed improvement at the same power, or reduce power consumption by approximately 25 to 30 percent compared to the previous N3E process.
Sustained Performance vs Competitors
Effective thermal management is critical to unlocking the chip's maximum potential, allowing the iPhone 18 Pro to maintain peak speeds for longer periods without generating excessive heat. Apple reports the A20 Pro delivers 40 percent more sustained performance than the A19 Pro found in the iPhone 17 Pro, and twice the sustained performance of the iPhone 16 Pro's A18 Pro. Rather than just chasing high benchmark scores, this stability is expected to improve real-world tasks like extended gaming, navigation, and high-resolution video recording.
While Apple is the first to market with 2nm technology, competitors are taking a slightly different route. Chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek are reportedly waiting for TSMC's refined N2P node for their upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 processors. This delayed N2P process arrives after N2 and is expected to offer a 5 percent performance edge at the same power draw, setting the stage for a highly competitive 2026 mobile processor landscape.
