Anthropic just blurred the line between its mid-tier and flagship AI. The new Claude Sonnet 5, launched today, June 30, 2026, offers performance nearly identical to its top-end Opus model but at a fraction of the cost.

The new model is built for complex, multi-step "agentic" jobs like coding and tool use, effectively bringing high-end AI capabilities to the masses. It's available immediately and is now the default for Anthropic’s Free and Pro plans, as well as for Max, Team, and Enterprise customers.

Early benchmarks reveal that Sonnet 5 has all but erased the performance gap with its pricier sibling, Opus 4.8. In some cases, it even pulls ahead.

On the GDPval-AA v2 benchmark for knowledge work, Sonnet 5 scores 1,618, edging out Opus 4.8's 1,615 and crushing the 1,395 score of its predecessor, Sonnet 4.6. In tests of multi-disciplinary reasoning with tools, Sonnet 5 hits 57.4%, nearly matching Opus 4.8's 57.9%.

This performance jump positions Sonnet 5 as the new workhorse for most professional tasks and AI agent development. Opus 4.8 now seems reserved only for situations demanding the absolute highest level of accuracy.
