There is a lot of talk about affordability in 2026, and thankfully a few automakers still offer inexpensive new sedans priced under $25,000. Budget-conscious buyers looking for an updated daily driver have a fresh option to consider, as Nissan just rolled out the 2027 Sentra with a revised transmission, a new Qi2 phone charger, and an edgy Midnight Edition package.
The entry-level sedan is currently on sale, starting at $22,890 before a $1,245 destination fee. While that price reflects a $290 bump over last year’s model, it still manages to undercut the newly released 2027 Toyota Corolla by $435 while boasting a cheaper delivery fee.
Blackout Aesthetics Meet the Sentra SR
The most noticeable visual change for the new model year is the Midnight Edition package, offered exclusively to buyers opting for the Sentra SR trim. For an extra $650, this appearance upgrade leans heavily into the blackout styling trend. It equips the sedan with stealthy black badging, matching black window trim, and a striking set of black 18-inch alloy wheels.
To complete the shadowy aesthetic, Nissan includes a Super Black paint job as the standard finish for the Midnight Edition. If you prefer a bit more contrast, throwing down an additional $950 unlocks four distinct two-tone paint options that pair nicely with a contrasting Super Black roof.
Retuned Transmission and Tech Enhancements
Beyond styling updates, Nissan tweaked the driving dynamics by improving the tuning for the continuously variable transmission. The automaker explained that these adjustments stem directly from customer feedback, reflecting a broader push to implement “meaningful, targeted changes that enhance the ownership experience”.
Thanks to the retuned CVT, drivers should expect smoother and more linear acceleration, along with a “crisper response” and a “more predictable driving experience”. Supplying the power for all 2027 Sentras is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 149 hp (111 kW / 151 PS) and 146 lb-ft (198 Nm) of torque.
When compared to its primary rival, the Sentra’s engine requires a heavy foot to keep up with highway traffic, as the Corolla features a stronger 169-horsepower engine. The Sentra gets up to an EPA-estimated 33 mpg in combined city/highway driving, trailing slightly behind the Corolla's EPA-estimated 35 mpg combined. Furthermore, the Sentra does not offer all-wheel drive or a hybrid powertrain, whereas the Corolla Hybrid delivers an impressive EPA-estimated 50 mpg combined.
However, the Sentra strikes back with a roomier cabin and superior utility. The Nissan boasts more elbow room and front legroom, and its front seats are considered among the best in any compact car for keeping occupants comfortable on long drives. It also easily hauls more luggage, offering a 14.3-cubic-foot trunk compared to the Corolla’s smaller 13.1-cubic-foot cargo space.
Technology upgrades bring a welcome addition to the center console, where the car can now be equipped with a new Qi2 wireless smartphone charger. Even the base model arrives generously appointed with LED lighting units, 16-inch steelies, a four-speaker audio system, a 7-inch cluster display, and a massive 12.3-inch infotainment system.
Stepping up to higher-end variants unlocks much nicer amenities, rewarding buyers with TailorFit upholstery, heated front seats, and a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster. The Sentra also provides an impressive bundle of driver-assist technology for the money, offering available features like a high-definition surround-view camera system, rear parking sensors, and enhanced functionality for adaptive cruise control in stop-and-go traffic.
